It’s not often that a sporting event is best remembered for a postgame press conference. But it happened on October 16, 2006 in the aftermath of a game between the Arizona Cardinals and the Chicago Bears in Glendale, Arizona. The game itself was dramatic but sloppy: the teams combined for eight turnovers, six of them by Chicago. The 1-4 Cardinals were beating the undefeated Bears 20-0 at halftime, and then 23-10 after the third quarter. But the Bears’ dynamic defense and special teams came through in the fourth quarter, with a 40-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Charles Tillman with five minutes left and an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown by Devin Hester with three minutes to go – and the Bears pulled it out, 24-23. After the game, when Cardinals coach Dennis Green was asked by a reporter a question about his team’s defense, Green lost his cool. He issued a tirade peppered with vulgarities in which he repeatedly screamed: “They are who we thought they were!” The Bears went on to win the NFC title, while the Cardinals finished the season 5-11. ― NFL 100
