The first NFC Championship game played in the 21st century, between the Bucs and the Rams at the Trans World Dome in St. Louis, didn’t go as expected. The Rams, who had the league’s best offense, were 14-point favorites. But by midway through the fourth quarter, all they’d mustered was five points – on a field goal and a safety. Luckily, their opponents had scored just six points, on two field goals. The Rams’ offense, though, led by their quarterback and league MVP Kurt Warner, finally struck: with just under five minutes left, and the ball on the Tampa Bay 30, Warner threw a touchdown pass to wide receiver Ricky Proehl to pull ahead, 11-6. The Rams missed their two-point conversion but, with help from some deafening crowd noise, they held the Bucs on defense and won the NFC title. The Rams went on to beat the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, the first in franchise history. NFL 100
