In the nation’s capitol, on a cold Sunday afternoon in January of 1984, the Redskins and 49ers faced off with a Super Bowl berth at stake. The heavily-favored Redskins, winners of 15 of 17 games, would need some late-game fortune to push them over the finish line. After a 70-yard touchdown pass from Joe Theismann to Charlie Brown, the Redskins led, 21-0, after three quarters. But in the fourth quarter, Joe Montana – who’d finish the game with 347 passing yards – was spectacular, throwing touchdown passes of 5, 12, and 76 yards to tie the game at 21. On the Redskins’ final possession, controversial penalties called against San Francisco enabled Washington to try a 25-yard field goal to win the game. Redskins kicker Mark Moseley, who had already missed four goals and made none, succeeded on the winning attempt to lift the Redskins to a 24-21 victory and into the Super Bowl. ― NFL 100
