Week 7: Montana Outduels Elway
On October 17, 1994, on a Monday night at Denver’s Mile High Stadium, two of the great quarterbacks in NFL history squared off in a duel that for 60 minutes left viewers riveted. The clash, between the Chiefs’ 38-year-old Joe Montana, in his final NFL season; and the Broncos’ John Elway, who was 34, was a back-and-forth affair: In both the second and third quarter, Montana and Elway each threw a touchdown pass, and the score was 21-21 heading into the fourth. With under two minutes left, a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Elway pulled Denver ahead, 28-24. The Chiefs got the ball at their own 25, and Montana calmly and efficiently led his offense down the field, completing 7 of 8 passes, the last of which was a touchdown throw to Willie Davis to clinch a 31-28 win. Montana finished the evening with 393 yards passing and three TDs. ― NFL 100
