AFC Divisional Playoff: Elway Comeback
John Elway was known for his poised and dramatic fourth quarter comebacks, and this one was among his finest. In early January of 1992, Elway’s Broncos were playing at Mile High Stadium in an AFC Divisional playoff game against the Houston Oilers and their high-powered offense led by Warren Moon. The Oilers QB, who led the NFL that season with 4,690 yards passing, got Houston off to a hot start, tossing touchdowns to Haywood Jeffires and Drew Hill in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead. After another Moon TD pass in the second quarter, Houston was in command, 21-6. But the Broncos chipped away, and cut the deficit to 24-23 in the fourth quarter. A terrific Houston punt late in the game pressed the Broncos back inside their own 2. That’s when Elway unleashed his magic: he calmly and efficiently led the Broncos all the way down the field, during which he converted a pair of critical fourth downs, to set up David Treadwell’s 28-yard field goal. The Broncos, despite 325 yards passing by Moon, won 26-24 to advance to the AFC title game. ― NFL 100
