Super Bowl XXII

Super Bowl XXII between the Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos, which was played at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium on the last day of January in 1988, wasn’t a competitive game. But the contest’s historic second quarter – and the performance of Redskins quarterback Doug Williams – heightened its significance. League MVP John Elway threw an early 56-yard touchdown pass, and Denver led 10-0 after the first quarter. The 32-year-old Williams, the first black quarterback to play in a Super Bowl, had only started two games during the 1987 regular season. But he was about to pull off something special. In the second quarter alone, he tossed four touchdown passes, including ones for 80 and 50 yards, and threw for 228 yards – both Super Bowl records to this day. The Redskins outscored the Broncos 35-0 during that period to take a 25-point lead into halftime. Washington scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to win 42-10.
