NFL Championship Game: "The Sneakers Game"

The outcome of the 1934 NFL Championship Game, played at the Polo Grounds in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City, was perhaps determined by an unusual x-factor: basketball sneakers. The showdown between the Giants and Bears was a rematch of the previous year’s title game in which the Bears had prevailed, 23-21; undefeated Chicago had already beaten New York twice during the 1934 season. After two quarters, George Halas’ Bears looked poised to win again, and held a 10-3 lead. The Giants' team treasurer, John Mara, had noticed prior to the game the playing surface was frozen, slippery and difficult to navigate. Mara alerted the coach and team captain and the Giants came up with an idea. To improve traction, the Giants borrowed sneakers from the basketball team of nearby Manhattan College -- they wore sneakers in the 2nd half and the plan ultimately worked. The Giants scored four touchdowns in the fourth quarter to win the title, 30-13. The game thereafter became known as “The Sneakers Game.” ― NFL 100
